Steady took heat 1 comfortably from Matej Zagar while Andy Moore passed Andrew Appleton out of turn 2 on the first lap. Birko took an early lead in heat 2 with Ben Wilson trailing the field, but Steve Braidford was hanging on for dear life and lost it on the 3rd turn of lap 2. Steve aggravated an old knee injury and took no further part in the meeting. Ricky taped to win heat 3 and Garry Stead passed Richard Hall on the 2nd lap. Steady won heat 4 as the rider replacement but Chris Mills did a fine job of containing Ben Wilson at the back. Ricky won heat 5 from the tapes but Richard Hall retired from last place.

Steady and Andy Moore took a maximum in heat 6 with Andy rounding Garry Stead on the 3rd lap to extend our aggregate lead to 5, but opened the door for Garry Stead to take a tactical heat win in heat 7. It could have been worse though as Simon Cartwright made a mistake on the 2nd turn on lap 3 which let both Richard Hall & Birko through. The Racers haemorrhaged more points in heat 8 with Chris Mills falling on the 2nd lap while in the lead. Strangely the fastest man around Owlerton seemed content to follow Ben Wilson home. Ricky beat Matej again to win heat 9, and although Chris Mills passed Richard Hall out of turn 2, Richard quickly regained the place on the very next turn. Heat 10 saw a close run first lap with four riders line abreast down the back straight. Steady emerged as race leader and Andy threaded his way past Simon Cartwright out of turn 4 for another heat advatage which restored our lead to 11, and 6 on aggregate.

Ricky beat Matej again to win heat 11, more important because Matej was on a tactical, but James tasted shale on the 2nd turn although he quickly remounted. Our 9 point lead was decimated in heat 12 as Ivan Shears exploited the weak heat in our new riding order by giving Andrew Appleton a golden double tactical substitute ride. Simon Cartwright made the start of his life and never looked back while Andrew first passed Ben on the 2nd lap, and then Richard in an extremely brave (some thought foolhardy) outside swoop on the 3rd turn after they had clashed handelbars and bounced off the back straight fence. Steady won heat 13 but Andy retired from last place to leave us 2 adrift on aggregate. Ricky won heat 14 but Garry Stead rounded James to leave us level on aggregate with one race to go. Matej chose this one to claim his first race win with both Ricky and Simon left trailing well behind, a result which was repeated exactly in the ensuing run-off for the bonus point.

Rider replacement for André mustered 7+1, and Danny Bird just 6+1 which just about evens things out. Difference between the teams was simply the golden double tactical substitute, although Andy was well below his normal home form. Track conditions were not to Ben's liking and the only Reading rider he beat was the fallen Chris Mills. Richard found the Racers heat leaders too hot to handle but that's hardly surprising given the job he's been asked to do. Stoke and Hull in the next 10 days should prove to be even bigger challenges!
