The Comets came back with a vengance with "angry Aussie" Malcolm McKay picking up maximum points to help his team to their first victory. The Cubs started well but then tailed off allowing the Comets to take the chequered flag in all the last seven heats to clinch the match.

Ian Armstrong, riding with a broken collar bone, hit the fence while leading heat 2 but picked himself up from the terraces to complete his programmed rides, while Bob Valentine claimed a win and a second before retiring from the meeting with a suspected fractured foot. Doug Wyer, Stuart Ulph and Taffy Owen rode well for the Cubs, but Lou Sansom, Reg Wilson and rider/coach Vic Lonsdale had the edge as the Comets fought hard to get back into the match and run out comfortable winners.

The Sheffield 'B' team's home debut was the return leg against the 'Comets'. Reg Wilson and Dave Kumeta were both Sheffield assets on loan to the Cumbrian side, but Reg was recalled for this first meeting in front of the Owlerton crowd. Aussie Bob Valentine led the side but had a nightmare with a fall and an engine failure restricting his scoring. Doug Wyer broke the tapes and also had engine problems and Bernard Hornby fell three times in the restarted heat 9 after Reg Wilson had fallen and been excluded in the pouring rain at the first attempt. The Tigers trailed by one point going into the last heat but Reg and Doug gave us a taste of things to come with a superb win ahead of the Aussie Lou Sansom to steal the win for the home side. Excellent displays from both Stuarts Jay and Ulph who never seemed able to emulate these performances.
