The Inter-Continental final of the World Team Cup at Vojens meant the Wolves were missing Hans Nielsen (Denmark) and Hasse Danielsson (Sweden), and the Tigers were missing Ales Dryml (Czechoslovakia). In addition Hans Christensen was riding in a domestic world championship qualifier. Injuries were affecting both teams too with Dave Morton (Wolves) Jan Zabik and Phil White (Tigers) nursing broken bones. National League guests seemed to be the order of the day. Henny Kroeze's name appeared in the programme for the Tigers but it was Workington's Brett Saunders who was pencilled in. Boston's Steve Lomas replaced Jan Zabik. The Wolves tracked Scunthorpe's Arthur Browning, Newcastle's David Bargh plus Billy Burton and Neil Evitts of Stoke.

The Tigers were defending a slender 4 point advantage from the first leg and kept the scores very tight with neither side getting more than two points clear in the first ten heats. A maximum from Eric Broadbelt and Steve Lomas in heat 11 put the Tigers 6 points ahead, but the Wolves levelled the scores again with a 5-1 in heat 16. Doug Wyer completed his maximum in heat 17 and Klaus Lohmann's second place put the Tigers through to the next round. Reg Wilson followed the Wolves skipper home in the final heat to inflict the third consecutive home defeat on the struggling Wolves.
