Another home defeat for West Ham for whom only Christer Lofqvist won a race. The spectacular Swede did it four times, but when called upon to do it again in the last heat his exertions caught up with him. Guest Malcolm Simmons took the flag and thus earned Sheffield their first away victory.

Sheffield alwys looked that much more willing to try their arm. Simmons was a smart relacement for Jim Airey and Arnie Haley challenged well - but the real trump card was reserve Bob Valentine. The fact that he made the gate in heat 13 proved as valuable as any of his three heat wins as he managed to hold up Lofqvist for three laps

The real sparks came off the track as West Ham riders and officials clashed over the state of the track - another symptom of the general Custom House discontent these days.
