Back in 1966 the World Championship trail for British and Commonwealth riders started with 20 preliminary rounds at tracks around the country with the top scoring 32 of the one hundred riders progressing to one of the British semi-finals at Cradley and Halifax. The British final was at Wimbledon, followed by the Nordic British final here at Owlerton, and the European final at Wembley. The top 10 would then meet the top six Swedes in the World final at Gothenburg.
Barry Briggs and Billy Bales tied on 13 points, and wheras today the winners cheque for £20 would have gone to Billy for having most heat wins, on this occasion they had a run-off with Billy winning in a time of 72.8.
