This was the first season the two clubs had operated in the same League. Earlier in the month the Robins had lost by 38-40 on their first visit to Owlerton and their powerful trio of heat leaders proved to be more than a match for the Tigers on their first visit to Blunsden. John Dews was our solitary heat winner with a victory in heat 12.

Barry Briggs rode unbeaten in the match and also won the Stroud scratch race final as he continued his current run of form. He'd recently taken the Golden Helmet and also qualified for the British final dropping just one point in his qualifying rounds when beaten by Jim Lightfoot at Long Eaton. In the Will's Internationale he suffered machine problems in his first two rides but then beat all of the top three finishers, namely Charlie Monk, Gote Nordin and Bjorn Knutson.
