Allied Breweries were sponsoring a number of prestigious sporting events including Indoor Cycling at Wembley, Golf at Gleneagles and a various greyhound meetings up and down the country. Their recent interest in speedway included the SKOL British League Riders Championship in 1975 and the SKOL World Team Cup won by the Australians in 1976. For the SKOL Masters the top 32 heat leaders in the country had been invited to compete in sem-finals at Sheffield and Poole and the top sixteen met in the final at Birmingham's Perry Bar stadium. Prize money was £500 to the winner, £200 for second place and £100 for third.
There were a number of absentees. Malcolm Simmons and Bernt Persson didn't arrive, along with meeting reserve Michael Lee. Christer Sjosten flew back from Sweden and although he made it to Heathrow his equipment didn't.
