Track conditions were dicey to start with and there were four fallers in the first three heats (Tim Hunt scrambling back on for a point in heat 1). Per Jonsson was absent and his place was filled by National League guest Neil Middleditch currently with Arena Essex following Poole's closure and drop into the lower division. Mitch Shirra was only included after a very late fitness check and made his debut following an out-of-season injury. He too fell in his first ride and finished the evening without opening his account.
Tigers new signing Peter Carr from the Belle Vue Aces was another absentee and Sheffield also turned to the National League for a replacement although Birmingham's Reg Wilson looked very familiar in the Tigers race jacket. A last heat 5-1 from Les Collins and Shawn Moran tied the match and Shawn went on to beat John Davis in a run off to claim the bonus point. Shawn and John then met again in a match race for the Golden Helmet with Shawn successfully defending his title when John fell.
