Report by Colin Smith from Speedway Star & News, Vol.20 No.20

Poole skipper Pete Smith and his heat partner Odd Fossengen came to the tapes for the final race of the match knowing that they must score a 5-1 win to gain victory for the Pirates.

Unfortunately for the Poole pair they were up against top Tiger Jim Airey in this decisive race - and the Sheffield skipper was in no mood to surrender his opportunity of completing a maximum. Fossengen made it hard going for Airey, given his toughest race of the night. But Poole could do no better than make it a 3-3, and this meant the team's third home defeat of their league season.
