Programme imageThe Tigers made a cracking start to what was expected to be a close match. Dmitri and Simon left Craig trailing from the start in heat 1 and even when Simon passed his team mate and left him to his own devices, Dmitri was never seriously troubled by Craig Cook. Arthur trapped to lead heat 2 and Zdenek Holub looked uncomfortable as he exited turn two allowing Nathan to pass him up the inside. Simon was the rider replacement in heat 3 but it was Josh who stormed around from gate 4 to take the lead. Simon and Ulrich were side-by-side into turn 1 and Simon took a nudge which sent him on his arse into the air fence. After receiving attention he limped from the track with a twisted knee. Arthur replaced him for the rerun in which Josh wasn't quite as quickly away, but was alongside Ulrich and moving more quickly on the outside of the second bend when Ulrich turned right on him. (I had the perfect view from the hospitality box!) Josh can consider himself lucky to be in one piece but was cruelly excluded by Peter Clarke.

Dmitri and Kyle between them took the chequered flag six times in the next seven heats to keep the Tigers in the match, but having gone 10 ahead succumbed to an Ostergård tactical win in heat 7. Then the wheels came off the cart. Kyle was beaten by Craig in heat 11, Ulrich beat Josh in heat 12 and Craig beat Kyle again in heat 13. We were relying on Josh to come up with the goods in heat 14 to keep us in the match, but he trailed in last behind the wobbly Holub leaving us 1 point down into heat 15. Craig out gated Dmitri and Ulrich joined him by rounding Kyle out of turn 2. Kyle skirted the boards and squeezed between Ulrich and the fence (he must have balls of steel that lad) on the second lap and made an attempt to catch Craig, while Dmitri closed in on Ulrich but was never going to make a pass on the inside.

I'll guess that Josh's best bike was put out of commision in his heat 3 crash, but that coupled with losing Simon was just too much. Pity we didn't have the kind of team manager who juggles his reserves to best effect because we only needed the odd couple of points to save the match, but we have to struggle by with Eric Boocock.
