Oxford were celebrating their first away win for over three years following their success at Dudly Wood the previous weekend. Bob Kilby was in hospital for a cartiledge operation and his place was taken by Cradley's Pete Jarman. The Tigers were short three riders; Doug Wyer was also injured and both Bob Valentine and Rick France were riding in the British Final. Their places in the Sheffield team were taken by Bobby Beaton (Coatbridge), new Oxford track record holder George Hunter (Wolverhampton) and Norman Hunter (Swindon). The Oxford management were casting a critical eye over Arnie Haley who had tabled a transfer request at the weekend.

Bob Paulson, Bengt Larsson and Norman Hunter won the first three heats which were all 3-3's, but the deadlock was broken by a Haley/Larsson 5-1 in heat 4. Bengt followed Reg home in heat 7 for another 5-1 and the Tigers were six points ahead. The Rebels staged a comeback and tied the scores in heat 12 to set up a last heat decider. Norman Hunter won the decider from Hasse Holmkvist and with Bengt scoring the important point the Tigers won despite two of their guests failing to open their accounts.
