Sheffield's Peter Carr was a non-starter as he refused the terms on offer, and Jan Stæchmann was a late arrival and missed his first outing which cost him a place on the rostrum.

Bradford's Antal Kocso was one of the strongest runners early in the meeting passing Roman Matousek to win his first race, but was beaten by Chris Morton in his second ride and both Sean Wilson and Jan Stæchmann third time out. Fellow Bradford rider Sean Wilson had the full backing of Gary Havelock in the pits and prior to his last race had dropped just one point to Long Eaton's Neil Collins. In heat 19 he was off gate 4 and he tried to lean on Roman into the first turn. Roman brushed him aside and set off after leader Chris Morton. Sean then dived up the inside of Roman into turn three and drifted him out towards the fence. Roman kept the throttle open and was about to pass Sean out of turn four when Sean turned right again leaving Roman with nowhere to go but down. Roman was furious and removed his helmet, gloves and steel shoe ready for a sharp word with young Sean, but track staff descended on him to diffuse the situation. Sean rode around to the pit gate, jumped off his bike and flew at Roman with fists flying. When his pit crew eventually calmed him down he learned that the referee had excluded him for dangerous riding.

Sheffield's Chris Morton only needed a single point to become the Northern Riders Champion and looked to have it well sewn up as he led from Glyn Taylor and Roman in the rerun, until disaster struck on the last lap when his machine expired. He pushed the bike home to ringing cheers.

There was more controversy in the run-off for second place. Sean Wilson led but Neil Collins found unexpected grip on the inside of the third turn, lifted and skittled Sean off on the fourth bend. Sean was furious and made threatening gestures at Neil before appearing for the rerun on Gary Havelock's machine. Shawn Moran ironically made the gate to lead and Neil Collins raised to roof again by passing Sean Wilson on the very last bend to grab third place overall.
