Sheffield were on a roll with recent away wins at both Cradley and Wembley, but were smarting after losing at home the night before to the Poole Pirates.

Bengt Brannefors made his debut for the Wasps following a long drive from Sweden but mounted on the track spare he struggled to impress. Bill Andrew was still plagued with machine problems and the Wasps provided just four heat winners all night. Arnold Haley missed out on a maximum when he was beaten by Sandor Levai in heat 6 while Jim Airey sewed up the match for the Tigers by winning from Norwegian Ed Stangeland in heat 13.
