The 'Wasps' had been walloped 52-26 at Ipswich the previous night, while the 'Tigers' had defeated Cradley Heath 41-37 at Owlerton. Ronnie Genz had broken a bone in his foot on his return from injury last week and Reidar Eide was away on World Championship duty so both teams were using a guest.

The 'Tigers' put a stranglehold on the match with maximum heats wins in the first two heats and when Bob Paulson and Doug Wyer outpaced tactical substitute Tony Clarke to win heat 8 it extended their lead to sixteen points. Guest Sandor Levai and Graham Plant claimed the 'Wasps' solitary advantage in heat 11 but Malcolm Simmonds and Bert Harkins countered with their own 5-1 in heat 12.
