Programme imageLast weeks welcome visitor was the programme front cover man.

Robert Lambert gated and was untroubled as he won heat 1 in a good time. Josh looked comfortable in second place and Simon content to  follow him home. Nathan trapped to win heat 2 with Lewis Rose in close contention. Dmitri sped into an unassailable lead in heat 3 while Kyle picked off Jack Holder out of the pits turn on the first lap, and then dived up the inside of Matej Kus into the third turn on the third lap. Steve Worrall was the early leader in heat 4 with Nathan powering around Danny Phillips into third place on the third bend. Jason Garrity blasted high and wide around Steve on the second bend and then skirted the fence to extend a full straight lead. Dmitri was called back for making a perfect start in heat 5. Robert led in the restart with Kyle in second place. Dmitri passed his team mate at the end of the second lap but had left it too late as by then Robert was long gone.  Tigers 8 points ahead and cruising comfortably.

Steve led from the gate  in heat 6 and easily contained Simon's attempts. Lewis made a lurid attempt to pass Josh for third place on the last lap but Josh switched back inside him out of the last turn. Jason's first effort from the tapes in heat 7 was so good Mike Breckon asked him to show us all again! I was stood on the first bend and saw the re-start perfectly. Matej on gate 2 changed his starting position three times, each time getting closer to Jason on gate 1. Lou checked it out and seemed satisfied, but then as the green light came on Matej's elbow shot up right into Jason's face. Jason had to duck and dive but made it to the first bend ahead and, would you believe it, Matej wasn't too pleased! Jack and Arthur made a race of it, but Matej spat his dummy and waited on the centre green until the race finished before riding back into the pits. Matej was back out in heat 8 as rider-replacement and even more determined. Nathan took a tumble on the second turn but quickly cleared the track leaving Josh well ahead. Josh then bailed out on the third bend, third lap for no apparent reason, but I would suspect that his recently dislocated collar-bone may have something to do with it. Steve trapped to win heat 9 from Dmitri and Kyle. Nathan replaced Josh in heat 10 and trapped ahead. Matej powered into the lead by the end of the first lap and Jack Holder caught and passed Nathan on the third lap. Simon eventually passed him as they entered the last lap but by then Diamonds were home and dry. The Tigers 10 point lead was suddenly reduced to 1 and there were some worried expressions around the terraces as Simon, Kyle and Josh all seemed to have issues of one kind or another and it was a hard stretch of the imagination to believe Nathan and Arthur could step into the breach.

Jason and Robert were neck and neck from the tapes in heat 11 with Jason pulling slightly ahead out of turn 2. Robert gained a slight advantage around the outside but Jason fought back and eventually edged into a slightly better lead out of turn 2 on the last lap. One of the better races  at Owlerton this year and very well received by the crowd. Kyle trapped ahead in heat 12 and Lewis Rose was so gob smacked that he took a tumble on the first turn. A lot hinged on heat 13 but the Tigers trapped and for a change Michael didn't mind. Simon had his work cut out but used his track craft to hold off Robert's challenges and the home supporters breathed a huge sigh of relief. Jack Holder trapped ahead in heat 14 but with the Tigers filling the minor places it wasn't a problem. No one told Dmitri though and he pushed and probed for three and a half laps before swooping around the outside of the last two turns to win the sprint to the flag. Cue another standing ovation from the Owlerton massive! Heat 15 sees the Tigers 9 points ahead and the Diamonds needing a 1-5 to steal a match point. Dmitri was up against Elite opposition in heat 15 but not far off the pace. Steve in third place was perfectly placed to watch one of the best races of the year as Robert and Jason again used every inch of the track all the way to the flag.

The Owlerton supporters are so lucky to have a track which supports this kind of racing, and riders who can demonstrate it on a weekly basis. Thanks also to Robert and Steve in particular for making a match of it. Shame Matej had to cheat so flagrantly at the start of heat 7. Interesting to note that on the results from this season alone (not official averages) Jason just overtook Simon at the top of our averages.
