The 'Stars' promoted Richard Hellsèn to deputize for David Gagen and brought in junior Derek Harrison at reserve. The solitary point the two of them scored was poor compared to what might have been expected from David, and probably swung fortunes in the Tigers favour.

The 'Tigers' tracked Nicky Allott in place of the programmed Phil White and he picked up two race wins although he only beat the home reserves. Tony Boyle was in the wars again being bundled off by Carl Glover in heat 5, and again by Richard Hellsèn in heat 8. The decisive point in the match was when Craig Pendlebury made the gate in heat 9 and team mate Bernie Persson blocked every attempt made by Terry Betts to get past. Michael Lee was immediately utilized as a tactical substitute and won the next heat but Doug Wyer outpaced Ian Turner to minimize the damage. Bernie and Reg put the 'Tigers' in an unassailable lead in heat 12 so Ian Turners last heat engine failure had no effect on the final outcome.

The 'Stars' just failed to offer their top two sufficient backing. Michael Lee rode to an untroubled five ride maximum but Terry Betts in heat 6 was their only other winner. Doug Wyer was unfortunate to meet Michael three times in his four rides but the Tigers would have to put the victory down to Bernie Persson in what was probably his finest hour while wearing the the 'Tigers' colours.
