The Witches management were confident of a home win against the visiting Tigers, but questioned what winning margin would be sufficient to take to Owlerton for the second leg. What they hadn't banked on was Sheffield team manager Terry Thornhill playing a tactical blinder. By dropping reserve Rodney Haynes and bringing in our No.8, the newly crowned National League Riders Champion Carl Glover on his assessed average, it meant that second-string Arnold Haley reverted to reserve. Six rides later Arnie emerged from Foxhall Heath as Sheffield's hero in our four point victory.
