Having
failed to attract Italian Armando Castagna to join the Tigers Maurice Ducker
and Eric Boocock secured the services of Alf Busk from the Swindon Robins, Flemming
Rasmussen losing his team place just days after his best meeting when he scored
5 (paid 7) in a challenge match at Dudley Wood.
The Witches also tracked a new rider having signed Ellesmere Port's Louis Carr, Peter's elder brother, who had previous first division experience with Belle Vue, Wolverhampton and most recently Exeter. Les Collins started this Bank Holiday meeting well but failed to score in his last two rides as the Witches fought back into contention. Sam Nikolajsen and Neil Collins took a 5-1 in heat 11 to restore the Tigers eight point lead. Peter Carr passed Richard Knight but couldn't catch John Cook in heat 12 although his two points were sufficient to win the match. Kai Niemi became the only visitor to beat Shawn in heat 13 but it was academic as the match points were already banked.
Tony Forward top scored for the Cubs in the Junior League match but both Lee Potter and Robbie Fuller impressed for the Junior Witches. Indeed if Lee hadn't suffered engine problems in heat 6 the Witches would have probably won. Mark Hepworth struggled around in the last heat with a broken footrest to score the vital point that separated the teams.
