The Tigers were without Phil White (broken leg) and Jan Zabek (injured shoulder), and were programmed to operate rider replacement for the absent Ales Dryml. Always keen to bring on the juniors Ray Glover called up Ellesmere Port's Steve Finch who contributed an impressive 9 points beating Ivan Mauger, Dennis Sigalos and Shawn Moran in the process.

The Vikings were missing Joe Owen and Ian Thomas elected to promote Frank Auffrett from reserve and call up Newcastle's young Kiwi David Bargh. Kelly Moran having departed to join Birmingham the third heat-leader slot was filled by his 18 year-old brother Shawn. The reigning American Long-track champion had been enjoying an impressive run of form from the reserve berth in recent weeks, but he was destined to leave the Vikings before the end of the season.

The second-half final was won by Ivan Mauger from Doug Wyer, and Rob Woffinden won the junior final ahead of young Aussie Brett Saunders, Gary Johnson and Wayne Jackson.
