The Tigers arrived at Waterden Road smarting after being held to a draw by King's Lynn at Owlerton the night before.

A 5-1 from Bert Harkins and Reg Wilson in heat three ahead of home favourite Barry Thomas gave the Tigers a lead they would never surrender. Bengt Jansson dropped points to both Reidar Eide and Reg Wilson and a 4-2 from Arnie Haley and Bob Paulson in heat 11 put the Tigers six points ahead and opened the door for Len Silver to use a tactical substitute. Barry Thomas replaced Dave Kennett in heat 12 and lined up alongside Bengt Jansson. Bertola was over eager and broke the tapes and the Hawks top men sped to a 5-1 over Reidar in the rerun. The Tigers needed three points from the last heat to win the match and Arnie came up with the goods winning from Geoff Maloney.

Geoff Maloney, top scorer against Coventry one week previously, rode for second division Rayleigh Rockets and was deputizing for the injured Hugh Saunders. Other Hawks in the wars included Roger Wright, injured foot at Rye House, Laurie Etheridge, fall at Wimbledon, Eddie Reeves, falls at Wimbledon and Hackney, and Barry Thomas who was riding against Doctor's orders.

The programme lists the Hawks averages from the last six official fixtures which are used to determine riding order. It claims Bengt Jansson has a CRA of 3.45 which equates to a match average (CMA) of 13.80. Pretty impressive, even for Len Silver!
