Glasgow programme  The Premier Travel Inn Tigers were on a high following their away win at Workington on Saturday but their South Yorkshire namesakes nearly gave them a big surprise in their own lair.

Ben led heat 1 briefly but Danny Bird swept around him exiting turn two. The Sheffield reserves were very sluggish from the tapes in heat 2 and never recovered, but Emiliano and Kyle were just the opposite winning heat 3. André tangled with James on the run to the first turn in heat 4 The restart was better but Shane was the comfortable winner. Heat 5 saw Ricky and Ben punish the suspect Glasgow pairing of Lee Dicken and Kauko Nieminen.

Danny Bird popped out to win heat 6 from André and David McAllan passed Cooperman on turn 4 to put the teams level once more. Shane took another tapes to flag win in heat 7 but Emiliano followed Kyle as far as the last bend of the third lap before nipping through on the inside. Ben rounded the field to lead down the back straight in heat 8 but Mark never looked like troubling the home pair. André won heat 9 from Kauko while Paul desperately hung onto third place to put the PIRTEK Tigers back into a narrow lead. Emiliano made a terrific gate to lead from Danny Bird and Kyle passed David McAllan on the second turn in heat 10. Danny took a chance around the outside of turn 3 on the second lap but clipped Emiliano's rear wheel and was very lucky not to fall. Sheffield are now sitting on a comfortable six point lead.

Ricky rounded Shane to lead heat 11 and Ben's third place put the Tigers into tactical territory, and Stewart Dickson wasted little time. Lee packed his bikes away while Shane came out for a tactical substitution from a 15 metre handicap. James Cockle played his part well by gating and slowing the race up and Shane passed Kyle out of turn four at the end of the second lap, and then Paul on the outside of turn two, with James letting him through to complete a farcical 8-1 and negate Sheffield's hard fought advantage in a single stroke. André was squeezed out on the first bend in heat 13, but bounced back to win the rerun. Ricky gave his all but Shane went around him on the second lap. Emiliano, Paul and Kauko contested the lead on the first lap of heat 14, with Kauko taking the lead on the outside line and Emiliano diving up the inside off last bend on the second lap. James now put Paul under pressure but Paul dragged himself ahead on the second turn of the third lap. James barged through very roughly off the fourth turn and Paul was forced into the fence and was very lucky not to fall. That left André and Ricky needing a heat advantage to steal the win back, but alas it wasn't to be.

The PIRTEK Tigers may not have won, but we were good value for money and made the home side work for their two points. Ben and Emiliano rode their hearts out, Ricky never stopped trying, and Kyle was great value despite looking down on power. André and Ricky both lowered Shane's colours, which can't happen all that often at Ashfield. Paul rode his socks off but just didn't have enough grunt out of the turns, while Mark was never at the races, either from the gate or in terms of pace.
