Two late changes to the programmed teams with Keith Pritchard deputizing for American Ron Preston for the Eagles, and 17 year-old Rob Carter stepping up for missing Pole Zenon Plech for the Tigers.

The Tigers took the lead in heat 4, and extended it to six points in heat 7 which allowed the Eagles to counter with a twin tactical substitution in heat 8. Last places from Dave Morton and David Bargh saw the Eagles nose into the lead but Wayne Brown and Shooey restored the Tigers advantage in heat 11. The out-of-sorts Paul Woods fell in heat 12 leaving the Eagles trailing with one heat remaining and surprisingly chose Borje Ring as reserve replacement in the vital last heat. While Kelly Moran completed his maximum ahead of brother Shawn the Tigers skipper slid off at the back allowing the Eagles to level the scores.

The Eagles were very much a two-man team and sorely missed the in-form Ron Preston, but it has to be said that the Tigers let this one slip away.
