The Tigers pulled themselves together to defeat the Coatbridge Monarchs who had already got two away wins under their belts so far. They made light of the loss of Bob Paulson who had a broken arm, a broken bone in his foot and head injuries and would be missing for the rest of the season. All the Tigers except youngster Dave Baugh popped up to claim a heat win while only Reidar Eide and Bernie Persson took the chequered flag for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs had moved to the Cliftonhill Stadium at Coatbridge following their eviction from the Old Meadowbank stadium which was being prepared to host the 1969 Commonwealth Games. They tracked three riders, Reidar Eide, Bernt Persson and Bert Harkins who were all destined to ride for Sheffield in future years, Reidar and Haggis as team-mates in 1972, and Bernie in 1978 which proved to be his last season in Britain.
