Barry Briggs and Nigel Boocock had both crashed at Wolverhampton the week before in the Great Britain v Sweden test match. Barry suffered a broken thumb while Nigel had his broken collar-bone strapped up and they both battled on to keep their World Championship hopes alive.

The first semi-final at Poole had been rained off the night before but was re-scheduled for 2nd July and the qualifyers were; Ivan Mauger(14), Martin Ashby(14), Terry Betts(12), Charlie Monk(10), Ray Wilson(10), Eric Boocock(9), Trevor Hedge(9), Geoff Mudge(9), res Reg Luckhurst(8).

It was a long road to the World final in Gothenberg. Tonight's qualifyers still had to negotiate the British final (Wimbledon), the British-European (West Ham) and then the European final (Wroclaw)...
