2010 programme Ricky reported in fit after his spill at Perry Bar and the Tigers elected to use a guest for the injured Josef Franc. Peter Kildemand was an unusual choice considering he's never even seen Owlerton before. The Brummies chose in-form Rusty Harrison to replace injured Chris Kerr which looked ominous. Hugh Skidmore gates strongly to lead heat 1 and Peter Kildemand rounds Aaron Summers on the second turn to set us up for a 5-1, but Hugh's engine was smoking by the end of the second lap and exploded on the third. Rusty Harrison rounded Paul Cooper out of turn two in heat 2 and showed him a clean pair of heels. Heat 3 saw Ricky Ashworth rounding the field to lead out of turn two but Richard Hall made no impression at the back of the field. Steve Johnston leads heat 4 with Josh Auty climbing all over him. Arlo passes Kyle Newman out of turn two and Josh's efforts are rewarded as he passes Johno on the third lap. Ricky leads heat 5 from Aaron Richard and Jason Lyons. Richard swoops around Aaron on the second lap but cannot catch Jason. The Tigers lead by four points.

Johno gated in heat 6 and won with ease. Peter closed in on Rusty but couldn't make the pass while Hugh on his second bike retired on the last lap. Justin and Richard Sweetman gate to lead heat 7 but Josh dives past the pair of them on the third turn. Paul Cooper chases after Richard but he's clearly lacking speed. Hugh leads heat 8 but Aaron rounds the field to lead exiting turn two. Rusty's bike fails on the first lap. Johno traps to lead heat 9 but Richard Hall is on his trail. Richard swoops around him on the second lap but Ricky just doesn't have the pace to follow his example. Justin and Richard Sweetman lead heat 10 with Hugh giving his all in third. He gets alongside Richard on the last turn of the third lap but Richard fights back around the outside of turn two. Richard then cuts across Hugh as they enter the third turn and Hugh locks up and falls as a result, leaving our guest with nowhere to go and he ends up in the fence. The Brummies now lead by two points.

Aaron and Jason make the start and look set for a 5-1 in heat 11. Josh takes a lap to pass Paul and then sets off in pursuit. He tries to pass Jason on the inside a couple of times before blasting around him out of turn two on the last lap. He maintains his momentum and dives under Aaron on the third turn for a magnificent win. Ricky takes a tapes to flag win in heat 12 from Justin while at the back Kyle Newman passes Arlo on the third turn and Arlo cannot respond. Johno and Jason lead heat 13 but Josh blasts around Jason on the pits turn on the first lap, and then dives under Johno on the third turn on the second lap. Peter was trying to emulate his team mate but fell on the first lap and quickly remounted. Richard Sweetman led heat 14 from the tapes from Richard Hall, Paul and Rusty. Hally passes his namesake on the pits turn but Richard dives under him into turn one at the start of the third lap. Hally blasts high and wide to reclaim the lead and Paul (riding Ricky's bike) takes the important third place point to level the scores going into the last race. Josh Auty is the obvious nomination and he's joined by Ricky for the Tigers. Steve and Jason are Graham Drury's choice for the last heat decider. Jason leads the way but has Ricky and Steve right on his exhaust. Ricky takes the lead on the third turn and Josh closes on Johno. Jason swoops around Ricky on the first turn to reclaim the lead and Ricky is struggling to fight off Johno while Josh is trying to get on terms riding the inside for all it's worth. It looks as if the Brummies are about to take their third Owlerton win of the year when Jason's bike slows on the last lap leaving Ricky in the lead. Josh had battled his way past Johno but went too wide on the pits turn and nearly came off allowing Johno through into second. Brilliant race and my commiserations to the Brummies.

Jason's cruel failure in the last heat just about balances out Hugh wrecking his best engine in the first. The Tigers heat leaders were our weakness at the start of the season but they certainly came up with the goods tonight. Eleven heat winners compared to the Brummies four and we just scrape home by two points. Hugh's second bike wasn't fast enough and neither was Paul's. Arlo finished strongly against Redcar last week but lacked aggression tonight and really needs to start mixing it. He passed Gary Havelock last week but couldn't even respond to being passed by Kyle Newman tonight. Peter tried hard on his Owlerton debut but ended up in the fence twice. I hope he's not finished up out of pocket. Sidecars next week so hopefully the lads can get to work on their mechanical gremlins.
