Berwick programme Both Ben Wilson and Benji Compton were at the Under-21 final at Eastbourne so Andrew Tully (Edinburgh & Scunthorpe) guested at number 6  for the Bandits, while Chris Kerr (Redcar) was drafted by the Sheffield Window Centre Tigers. We were also missing Joel Parsons who had reported in ill and utilised rider replacement for him.

André Compton and Chris Kerr took advantage of a Michal Makovsky engine failure to record a 1-5 in heat 1. Berwick looked set to pull two points back in heat 2 with Andrew Tully leading from Paul Cooper and Rob Grant, but Rob made a mistake on the second lap and James Cockle picked up third place to share the heat. James Birkinshaw won heat 3 with Ricky Ashworth riding shotgun ahead of Jacek Rempala in third. Sheffield were on a roll and it continued in heat 4 with rider replacement Chris Kerr leading partner Paul Cooper home ahead of Stanislaw Burza. The Tigers lead by 12 points after four races and no Berwick rider has beaten an opponent yet! That soon changed when in heat 5 Jacek Rempala and Andreas Bergstrom out gated André and Chris although they missed out on three points by not nominating Jacek for a tactical ride. One third through the match and the Tigers lead by 8 points.

They further closed the gap in heat 6, but only by the single point. James Cockle was first to pull out with a puncture on the first lap, while Makovsky was leading until his engine died on the third lap leaving Michael Coles to head home Paul Cooper. Ricky and Birko were poised for another maximum in heat 7 but Birko lifted wide on turn 2 and took a tumble. Heat 8 saw Michael Coles leading from Chris Kerr and Andrew Tully but Chris hit a pothole on the 4th turn and fell gifting the Bandits a 5-1. Heat 9 saw the home team snatch back the lead with Jacek Rempala and Andreas Bergstrom awarded a maximum after Birko fell heavily trying to pass his partner and hitting that same pothole on the fourth turn. That was to be Birko's last appearance as his next ride was in the ambulance for a precautionary check-up at the local hospital. Michal Makovsky passed Cooperman on the inside of turn 2 to lead heat 10 but Ricky slotted in behind his partner to shield him from the pressing Michael Coles to share the heat. Three falls in consecutive heats, Sheffield's lead has gone and we're down to five men. The Bandits have certainly turned the match around.

The Tigers skipper got out of shape a couple of times in heat 11 but still led Chris home for a maximum win to wrestle back the lead, which was extended in heat 12 with Ricky blasting around Jacek on the first two turns while Cooperman outpaced Rob Grant for an important point. André led heat 13 from rider replacement Ricky but Michal swooped around the banking to pass Ricky on the third lap, and just failed to do the same to the skipper on the last lap. The Tigers are 7 points ahead with two races remaining. Heat 14 sees Andreas Bergstrom and the impressive Andrew Tully up against the Tigers reserves, but in his seventh race of the night Cooperman soaks up everything young Andrew throws at him to claim his first win, an unbeatable lead and the bonus point to boot. Jacek and Michal are nominated for the Bandits to meet Chris and Ricky but it's a foregone conclusion as the Tigers have already won.

A great show of character as the Tigers fought back into the match after having thrown away a twelve point lead. Great display by guest Chris Kerr balanced by a wonderful display by young Andrew Tully for the Bandits. André did a grand job both on track and in the pits. Ricky put some indifferent displays behind him equalling his best away score so far this season. Birko was released from hospital with, thankfully, no broken bones. I hope James C doesn't let his spirits drop. Many thanks once again to Gary Flint. Natalie certainly seems to have taken a shine to Cooperman, out every other race, top scorer and secured victory with his win in heat 14. A great start to our league campaign after crashing out of the Premier Trophy. Knockout Cup next on the agenda...
