This meeting marked Ole Olsen's first ever ride in Britain and he won it! In a meeting dominated by regular domestic riders Ole finished the pick of the Nordic contingent, with the exception of the well established Norwegian Sverre Harrfeldt who had joined Wimbledon in 1963, scored 10 points in the 1964 World Final and already shown his liking for Owlerton on his previous visits with his current club West Ham.

Kiwi's Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger claimed the top two qualifying places with Nigel Boocock joining them on the rostrum. Brother Eric took Borge Christiansen's rides after the Dane fell in heat 1 and did just enough to become the reserve for the European Final at Wembley in September, with Newcastle's Brian Brett the only British rider failing to qualify.

Subsequent Sheffield programmes carried letters of praise from supporters who had been highly impressed with the standard of racing and presentation of this meeting, including one from the secretary of the Cradley Heath supporters club.
