Barry Briggs bounced back from defeats by the two Scottish riders in his opening races to win this World Championship British zone semi-final. Ray Wilson dropped just one point to his Leicester team mate Aussie John Boulger in his first four rides but then finished a shock fourth behind Briggo, Tommy Roper and Chris Pusey in heat 17. This left him tied with Jimmy McMillan on 11 points, and it was the Scotsman who won the run-off. The winners spoils were a Sunday Mirror plaque and a cheque for £30, second place a plaque and £15, and third place a plaque and £5.

The Leicester semi-final was contested by; Belle Vue's Ivan Mauger, Coventry's Nigel Boocock, Hackney's Jack Biggs, King's Lynn's Terry Betts and Howard Cole, Newcastle's George Hunter, Oxford's Rick Timmo, Sheffield's Jim Airey, John Dews and Arnold Haley, Swindon's Bob Kilby, Wembley's Wayne Briggs and the Wimbledon quartet of Trevor Hedge, Reg Luckhurst, Cyril Maidment and Ronnie Moore. Back in those days the Australian and New Zealand riders competed in the British qualifying rounds by virtue of being Commonwealth members. The 32 riders who had qualified this far included three Scotsmen, four Aussies and six Kiwi's.

The British Final was scheduled for Tuesday 9th June at West Ham. Reserved seats 20s., 15s., 12s. 6d. Main enclosure 8s. 6d. (children 4s. 6d.) Popular enclosure 6s. 6d. (children 3s. 6d.) Also advertised was the Wills Internationale at Wimbledon, 25th May, featuring the British debut of Japan's Jimmy Ogisu.
